Managing Supply Chain Demand Variability with Scheduled Ordering Policies
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper studies supply chain demand variability in a model with one supplier and N retailers that face stochastic demand. Retailers implement scheduled ordering policies: Orders occur at fixed intervals and are equal to some multiple of a fixed batch size. A method is presented that exactly evaluates costs. Previous research demonstrates that the supplier’s demand variance declines as the retailers’ order intervals are balanced, i.e., the same number of retailers order each period. This research shows that the supplier’s demand variance will (generally) decline as the retailers’ order interval is lengthened or as their batch size is increased. Lower supplier demand variance can certainly lead to lower inventory at the supplier. This paper finds that reducing supplier demand variance with scheduled ordering policies can also lower total supply chain costs. (Supply Chain Management; Multi-Echelon Inventory; Bullwhip Effect)

Using Scheduled Ordering to Improve the Performance of Distribution Supply Chains
We study a supply chain with one supplier and many retailers that face exogenous endcustomer demands. The supplier and the retailers all try to minimize their own inventory-related costs. In contrast to the retailers’ newsvendor type ordering behavior (under which retailers may place orders freely in every period), we propose two scheduled ordering policies: Scheduled Balanced Ordering Policy (...
متن کاملOptimal Manufacturer-Retailer Policies in a Supply Chain with Defective Product and Price Dependent Demand
This study deals with a two-level supply chain consisting of one manufacturer and one retailer. We consider an integrated production inventory system where the manufacturer processes raw materials in order to deliver finished product with imperfect quality to the retailer, where number of defective product has a uniform distribution. The retailer receives product and conducts a 100% inspection....
متن کاملA bi-level programming approach to coordinating pricing and ordering decisions in a multi-channel supply chain
This paper investigates the Stackelberg equilibrium for pricing and ordering decisions in a multi-channel supply chain. We study a situation where a manufacturer is going to open a direct online channel in addition to n existing traditional retail channels. It is assumed that the manufacturer is the leader and the retailers are the followers. The situation has a hierarchical nature and...
متن کاملA two-level discount model for coordinating a decentralized supply chain considering stochastic price-sensitive demand
In this paper, a discount model is proposed to coordinate pricing and ordering decisions in a two-echelon supply chain (SC). Demand is stochastic and price sensitive while lead times are fixed. Decentralized decision making where downstream decides on selling price and order size is investigated. Then, joint pricing and ordering decisions are extracted where both members act as a single entity ...
متن کاملThe impact of information enrichment on the Bullwhip effect in supply chains: A control engineering perspective
This paper examines the beneficial impact of information sharing in multi-echelon supply chains. We compare a traditional supply chain, in which only the first stage in the chain observes end consumer demand and upstream stages have to base their forecasts on incoming orders, with an information enriched supply chain where customer demand data (e.g. EPOS data) is shared throughout the chain. Tw...
